Cat cancer is a very serious condition. The majority of cats diagnosed with cancer will die because of the disease which is why treatment options are especially important. As you would expect for people, treatment options for cat cancer are varied and becoming more effective. Currently, there are three main treatments for cat cancer: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

The fact is that treating cancer in cats is very similar to treating cancer in humans. For example, often the first step in treatment involves surgically removing the cancerous tumor or tumors. Depending on the location of the tumor, this stage of treatment is usually relatively successful. However, cat cancer treatments are not usually restricted to surgery alone. In fact, often cats will undergo both radiation and chemotherapy as well. Radiation is designed to shrink a tumor and is the go-to option when surgery is not possible. Still, radiation is sometimes given after surgery if not all the tumor could be removed. Finally, chemotherapy is the administration of chemical medications to kill off remaining cancer cells. Often used in combination with radiation therapy, it should be no surprise that cancer treatments take a toll on your cat’s body and immune system.

Considering the physical stress of cancer treatment, it is also important to consider some holistic treatments for your cat. Diet, for example, is extremely important. Ensuring a nutrient rich diet can prevent some of the side effects of cancer treatment as well as giving your cat the strength to undergo treatment.
